Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to discover a cause and processing of the major chronic disease, and to make the foundation for the study which contribute to genetic disease prevention through (the construction of) a community-based representative cohort study on a large scale. Further, the purpose is to decrease the burden of medical treatment to the chronic disease, to prolong the life span, to prevent the disease and to improve the quality of life for the people of the nation.

Methods : For this study we designated and selected the local 40 to 70 years old residents of Kangwha county at incheon metropolitan city, Uljin county at Gyeongsang Buk-Do(north province), and Donghae city at Gangwon-do(province) as main sites. And We collected the basic and genetic data and Vital samples by the qustionaire and the physical examinations from them.

Results : The first year, the study constructed the community-based cohort study to 4,242 40 to 70 years residents in a fishing village and islands, which consists of 2,534 members at kangwha county at incheon metropolitan city, 1,007 Uljin-town Uljin County Gyeongsangbuk-Do and 701 Donghae city and Samchuk city at Gangwon-do.
The basic(general) and genetic data and which is the risk factor of major chronical diseases are collected.

Conclusions : This study contributed to establish and promote the technical development of genetic element and the gene medical study as world-level through the genetic data collection on a large-scale and the genetic data management technology development. This study contributes to establish the foundation on which analyze distinctive features by genes finding new genes, discerning the variable genes, and studying the genetic environmental reciprocal action in general groups of population and provide the bases of analysing validity and confidency for the valiable developing gene tests and therapies from the social-economic respect. Further, this study contributes to improve the quality of life, to save the medical expenses and to improve the public welfare by introducing the direction of national public health policy fit for korean people.
